The Lives of Others - DVD Review

Film / Year of Release / Language: The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen)/ 2006 / German
Genre: Drama

Snapshot: One of the most brilliant European films of the 2000s. In 1984 East Berlin, an agent of the dreaded Staasi (secret police), conducting surveillance on a writer and his lover, finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed by their lives. The film is written and directed by multiple award winner Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.

Why its on my list: Ulrich Muhe revels in his role as the Staasi agent and is ably supported with standout performances by the lead cast. The film offers a fascinating insight into Cold War East Germany. Some of the Lead cast including Muhe grew up in Communist East Germany and I feel it was their real-life experiences that added to the authenticity of their performances. It must have been very tough for them to find locations in Berlin in 2006 that were untouched in the last twenty years and that looked like East Berlin in 1984.

Awards and Nominations: A staggering 56 International Awards and 22 nominations including the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 2006
