Xperia X1 vs HTC Touch Pro

We are well into 2009 and I still can't see any exciting Win Mo Business devices on the horizon. The last quarter of 2008 was when the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 and the HTC Touch Pro hit the shelves worldwide and according to me these are still among the best high-end Windows Mobile devices. So how do they stack up each other and is the Xperia's more than slight price premium over the Touch Pro worth your rupee/dollar?  Its interesting to note that while Sony Ericsson have designed the Xperia it is built by HTC.

Here's what they have in common:
  • Outstanding Interface: The Touch Flo 3D on the Touch Pro and the Panel Interface on the Xperia. Both terrific and both new Windows Mobile experiences
  • Windows Mobile 6.1: Both Work on the WM 6.1 platform. I'd be interested to see who is the first to offer an updgrade to WM 6.5 interface when it becomes available this year.
  • Slideout Keyboards: This is the clear differentiator for both these phones and therefore makes them irresistible to business users. Both are equally good!
  • Design and Looks:  Both look terrific but the Xperia is slimmer
  • Terrific Display Resolution: Both phones have crisp images!
  • Bundled Opera Browser

Key Specs (Xperia vs Touch pro) and what they mean for you and me:

  • Size - Xperia: 110 x 53 x 16.7 mm/ Touch Pro:102 x 51 x 18.05 mm. The Xperia is longer and wider but its slimmer and certainly feels nicer inside your jeans!
  • Weight - Xperia: 158 gm / Touch Pro: 165 gm. No major difference here
  • Screen size/display - Xperia: 3 inch (800x480 pixels)/ Touch Pro: 2.8 inch (640x480 pixels). Xperia is a runaway winner here. It almost feels like a widescreen laptop vs a normal laptop. Result - you can see 25% on your screen! However since it is a WGA display you may find it tougher getting themes and some third party apps right now
  • Processor speed - Both are 528 mhz. But the Xperia is certainly zippier. Maybe the Touchflo 3D slows down the Touch Pro.
  • Camera - Both 3.2 MP but here again the Xperia scores with better images
  • RAM/ROM - Xperia: 256MB and 512 MB / Touch Pro: 288 MB and 512 MB
  • User Experience: I had some problems (Constant rebooting) with the Touch Pro while accessing GPRS. It might have been due to their strange decision to have all phones in India SIM Locked with IDEA Mobile. This might be specific to India. Xperia is extremely stable for a Win Mo device
  • Add-ons/What's in the Box: Here Touch Pro scores over Xperia. Its surprising that the Xperia package does not come with a carry case or a screen protector. The Xperia does come with a 4GB Micro SD card though.
