This blog really started with the release of Dashavatharam and almost suddenly its time for the next big Kamal Hassan release. Unnaipol Oruvan is a remake of 'A Wednesday', easily one of the finest Hindi films of 2008 and not an easy act to follow. So with less than 24 hours to go and Kamal fans and fans of good Tamil Cinema waiting with bated breath the world over, here's what I hope we can expect:
- Powerhouse performances from the lead actors. Kamal stars in Nasserudin Shah's role (as the ubiquitous 'Common man' who decides to take things into his hands) and Mohanlal fills Anupam Kher's shoes as the smart Police Commissioner. Kamal and Mohanlal are easily among the finest actors in the country and a film that sees two of these guys pitted against each other is a terrific prospect.
- An edgy linear plot with no sideshows and item numbers. 'A Wednesday' almost happened in real time and was gripping. However 'A Wednesday' was essentially a Multiplex film not a mainstream Bolloywood potboiler. Unnaipol Oruvan will release big all over the world and I do hope it will keep the spirit of the original despite aiming to be a successful mainstream Tamil Commercial film.
- Good production values. The trailers look slick and edgy; let's hope the film is too. I love the look and feel of the film in the trailers and I'm sure the visuals (The Film will use the New Generation RED Camera) will not disappoint
- Music... Let's hope the background music sets the right tone. The soundtrack was average. None of the songs will feature in the film (Except in the background) but I do hope the music works
